Firefighters Battle Wind-driven Fire in Large Two-story Dwelling
Orange, California, February 9, 2023 – At 12:12 PM on February 9, 2023, Orange City Fire units responded to a reported residential structure fire at 6121 E. West View Drive. Upon arrival, Orange Engine 4 found heavy smoke and flames showing from a two-story, single-family residence, declared a working fire, and began offensive attack on the fire. Orange Battalion 1 assumed command and began assigning tasks to arriving fire units. Orange Truck 2 was assigned, however, unable to perform vertical ventilation as the fire burned through the roof with accelerated, high-sustained winds. Wind gusts up to 15 miles per hour presented fire exposure to the right, neighboring residence. Crews took offensive, interior attack, and were able to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring properties. Within forty minutes, firefighters had knock down of the main body of the fire in the attic. Wind conditions added to extensive overhaul and salvage operations with complete extinguishment at approximately four hours.
Forty-eight fire personnel responded to the incident. The Orange City Fire Department received assistance from Anaheim Fire and Rescue, the Orange County Fire Authority, the Orange Police Department, and Southern California Edison. Two residents were displaced. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported. The fire’s cause and damage estimate are under investigation.
