SUV Drives off Roof of Hospital Parking Structure

Orange, California, February 8, 2023 – At 8:41 AM on February 8, 2023, Orange City Fire units responded to a reported traffic collision with a possible trapped victim at 1201 W. La Veta Avenue, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). Upon arrival to CHOC, Orange Engine 5 found a Toyota SUV lying on its roof on top of a three-story building, and one elderly, female driver who had self-extricated. The victim was parked on the 5th floor of the CHOC parking structure and stated she had mistaken the gas pedal for the brake when attempting to back out of her parking spot. The SUV careened through an iron railing and fell approximately 15 feet. Orange Truck 1, along with Crane Rental Services of Orange, were able to lower the vehicle onto an awaiting flatbed tow truck and secure the damaged iron railing. The patient was transported to a local trauma center via Orange Rescue 6 in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

 

Fifteen fire personnel responded to the incident. The Orange City Fire Department received assistance from the Orange Police Department and Crane Rental Services. The incident lasted approximately three hours. The damage estimate is under investigation.
