Firefighters Quickly Control Hidden Fire in Busy Book Store
Orange, California, April 29, 2023 – At 5:06 PM Orange City Fire units responded to a reported investigation of smoke to the rear of a retail structure located at 791 South Main Street. Upon arrival, Orange Engine 5 reported finding a small exterior fire behind the structure, in addition to smoke inside the business. Orange Engine 5 upgraded the assignment to a working structure fire and assumed the role of Fire Attack. Orange Engine 5 quickly began the task of evacuating the very busy structure, and finding the source of the heavy black smoke that was building inside the structure. Orange Battalion 1 established command and upgraded the incident to a second alarm. As fire crews worked to locate and extinguish the fire in the interior of the structure, Orange Truck 1 deployed a ladder to the roof for ventilation operations. After an extensive search the fire was located and extinguished. Due to the nature of the business, extensive salvage, and overhaul operations took place alongside fire attack, to limit the damage to the stores inventory. The fire was knocked down in thirty-eight minutes and was contained to the wall and roof of the two-story structure.
Forty-five fire personnel responded to the incident. The Orange City Fire Department received assistance from Orange County Fire Authority, Anaheim Fire and Rescue, Orange Police Department, and Southern California Edison. No civilian or fire personnel injuries were reported. The incident lasted approximately four hours and ten minutes. The fire’s cause and damage estimate are under investigation.
