Hoarding Conditions Add Challenges to Deep-seated Fire
At 7:52 am on July 28, 2022, Orange Fire units responded to a reported residential structure fire on the 1900 block of E. Wilson Ave. Upon arrival, Orange Engine 2 found smoke and fire venting from the window of a two-story, multi-family dwelling. Orange Engine 2 upgraded the incident to a working structure fire and began attacking fire along with the personnel of Orange Rescue 3. Orange Battalion 1 took command of the incident and assigned tasks to arriving fire units. Orange Light Force 1 secured utilities, provided vertical ventilation by cutting a heat hole, and began salvage and overhaul operations. Additional crews placed smoke ejectors in adjacent structure unit due to smoke exposure. The fire was knocked down in approximately 15 minutes.
Approximately thirty fire personnel responded to the incident. The Orange City Fire Department received assistance from the Orange Police Department, Anaheim Fire and Rescue, Orange County Fire Authority, and Orange County Animal Control. No firefighters or civilian injuries were reported. Seven family members were displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. One individual received evacuation assistance from the first floor, below the incident. Unfortunately, nine cats died in the blaze. The incident lasted over three hours. The fire’s cause and damage estimate is under investigation.
